Portugal midfielder Armando Petit says he has received an offer to join Manchester United next season.
“Yes, it is true, I have received the offer of a contract from Manchester United,” said Petit, who has won 35 caps for Portugal, scoring four goals.
The 29-year-old international, who played in Portugal’s 1-0 World Cup win over Angola on Sunday, has four years left on his contract with Benfica.
But Petit says Benfica have given him the all-clear to speak to other clubs.
“Anyone would like to play for Manchester United,” he added. “If a proposal appears for me and Benfica, I have the possibility to leave.”
United had a £10m bid for Spurs midfielder Michael Carrick rejected this week.
