IMO a defensive midfielder is one of the most important players in modern, organized, tactical football. And knowing Owen, his game is too offensive. And when we look at Ballack at Chelsea, we see that it isn't easy to make offensive midfielders, even if they work hard without the ball, play 10 yards more withdrawn, this almost excluding Carrick to possibly fit that position. Smithy? Yes he can cover that area, but his tackling is a little weak don't you think? Daniel, I like rough tacklers. ;-)

Some good business, indeed. Even half that would have been good. I don't think Heinze been the same player since his return from injury and Evra definitely gets the nod. But this leaves us a little short at left back, doesn't it? I think we should keep both Rossi and Smithy. We lack cover for defensive midfielders and Alan can do that role if needed. He looked woeful in the Copa America final and struggles when subjected to any real pace. He is a great tackler (man and ball) but thats about where it ends.
