Ever when Mark Hughes, a former ManUtd legend who helped us achieve European glory, was announced at Eastlands I knew things would quickly deteriorate and ‘Sparky’ was on a path to destroy his status with the ManUtd fans. During his first press conference at The Council House he answered that he ‘had played for other teams as well‘ when asked if he thought there would be problems between him and Manchester United. Now he managed to drag our favourite whiner to the other side of town. But things are becoming totally ridiculous. Rumours say that Adebayor already passed a medical at Eastlands and will sign at City for a reported fee of £25m. That is still not enough for Sparky. Realizing that City has only invested in offensive talent ((And some old-timers such as Bellamy)) he has been flirting publicly with Mr. Chelsea. sadly a reported weekly fee of £250k still haven’t convinced John Terry to move to a club who even did not qualify for the UEFA cup under Hughes and the City manager not has to beg publicly to convince the England international and Skipper, AKA Mr. Slippery, to make the move to Eastlands:
We would like to think we could offer him a different challenge
No truer word could be spoken in matters of challenges. Instead of challenging for the European Champions League titel Terry would have to compete to qualify for the UEFA cup, possibly using backdoors such as the Intertoto or Fair Play challenges. The whine continues:
From my own experience, when you have been with a club a long time, you maybe get to a point when you need a new challenge, when you think a change of scenery would just re-ignite certain things within you.
Sparky obviously knows what he speaks about. If at some point his career was reignited it was because he was allowed to return to Old Trafford after he failed at Barcelona and was sent out on loan to Bayern Munich in 1987. When he returned to ManUtd he started a legendary 7 seasons with 256 appearances and rewarded us with 82 goals and the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup, scoring twice against his former club, FC Barcelona.
In his public plea to Terry, Hughes seems to forget the current economic climate and reality of £250k/week:
It is not a question of money. It’s about a different challenge, a different stage in his life and career, and maybe that’s why there hasn’t been a response because John is seriously thinking in those terms.
Leaving aside the humongous, totally overpaid and unreal fee, bordering on MLS temptation for retiring players, Sparky again tries to compare his legendary career to the one of pitbull Terry. There’s one difference though. When Hughes left Manchester United in 1994 he had become a bench warmer and knew that he would not be a regular starter in the 1994-1995 season when King Eric returned from his ban on September 30th, 1994. Terry is probably one of the few players in the English Premier League who does not have to fear for his spot. Not at Chelsea and not in the England squad.
Mr. Hughes, we loved you but to be honest it is time for you to get real. Hopefully after investing more than £150m of Arabian pocket money you will be able to take your squad to the top half of the table, a thing the former manager of Eastlands managed with an inferior squad. Please give up your managerial career, I’m sure there’s a spot for you in the Old Trafford backroom. Consider a return to ManUtd because right now you are making a joke out of yourself. You deserve better.
