Sir Alex Ferguson says he is keen to sign a midfielder before the January transfer window shuts.
Manchester United’s midfield line-up was depleted against Blackburn in the Carling Cup semi-final on Wednesday because of injuries and suspensions.
The United boss said to MUTV
“We know it is going to be difficult but we would like to bring someone in. We have to get someone who can add to the squad because we are light in the midfield area.”
United were without John O’Shea, Ji-Sung Park, Paul Scholes, Quinton Fortune and Ronaldo for the 3-2 aggregate win over Blackburn. Plus Smith has just recovered from an injury and Giggs picked up a knock during the game. So United really are scraping the barrel and using every makeshift midefielder possible, whether it be from attack- like Rooney, the flanks- like Richardson, or defence- like O’Shea.
But Ferguson conceded that he may struggle to find the right acquisition in time and may have to settle for a loan-signing:
“We are exhausting our knowledge of central midfielders in Europe, particularly one we can get on loan. It is impossible really because there is only a week left which is not a lot of time to start negotiating fees and things but we could just run out of time.”
As Man Utd Blog suggested in an earlier post last month, it’s not likely that we’ll be able to get the ideal midfielder in this short transfer window- for example a player like Gattuso, from AC Milan, who has made it known that he wants to join United and there is rumoured to be a secret agreement that he will sign at the end of this season. Also, the rumours about Thomas Gravesen, reputedly unhappy to be sidelined at Real Madrid, seem to have frittered away. So as we recommended- why not get a Premiership, experienced, hardened, English player who is on form, like Danny Murphy from Charlton?
Well anyway, here’s hoping…..!
