Fergie was reported by the Sun as being in Milan the other night to watch the Rossoneri beat Lyon – fuelling speculation that the Reds are planning a summer swoop for midfield ace Mahamadou Diarra, filling that crucial role vacated by Keano….
The 24-year-old is thought to be one of United’s main targets and put in a fine display at San Siro, despite ending up on the losing side. Diarra scored Lyon’s goal, but Filippo Inzaghe (two) and Andriy Shevchenko ensured the Italians progressed to the last four.
United have been searching for a defensive midfielder to replace Roy Keane, and since pulling out of the race to sign Michael Ballack, Diarra has emerged as a leading candidate for the holding role. He has played a major part in Lyon’s successful season – the club are 12 points clear at the top of the French league – and fits the age and defensive profile required by the Reds. It would ceratinly make an exciting midfield with Ji-Sung Park, a fit Paul Scholes and an in-form Ronaldo!
