Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson may give Wayne Rooney a rest from first-team action. The 20-year-old striker has missed only two out of the last 31 matches for United – and now Ferguson believes the England star deserves a break.
Fergie told The Sun:
“It’s particularly difficult giving younger players like Wayne a rest,” the United boss told the club website. I saw Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was saying Steven Gerrard needed a rest – it’s the same with Wayne.”
The England forward joined the Old Trafford outfit from Everton in August 2004 for �20m and has made over 70 appearances for the club.
Rooney has also established himself as a first-choice pick for England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and is expected to be included in the squad for the World Cup finals this summer. He has been without doubt United’s most consistent and star performer this season and very much in line for Man United Blog Player of the Season.
