Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson may give Wayne Rooney a rest from first-team action. The 20-year-old striker has missed only two out of the last 31 matches for United – and now Ferguson believes the England star deserves a break.

Fergie told The Sun:

“It’s particularly difficult giving younger players like Wayne a rest,” the United boss told the club website. I saw Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was saying Steven Gerrard needed a rest – it’s the same with Wayne.”

The England forward joined the Old Trafford outfit from Everton in August 2004 for £20m and has made over 70 appearances for the club.

Rooney has also established himself as a first-choice pick for England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and is expected to be included in the squad for the World Cup finals this summer. He has also developed a great playing understanding with the nucleus of United’s emerging young team, including Ronaldo, Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park…
