China international Dong Fangzhou scored a late winner as Manchester United beat Kaizer Chiefs in Cape Town on Tuesday.
The Premiership side struggled to break down the home defence, with Paul Scholes guilty of missing a great chance on 77 minutes.
But Dong broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute with a close-range strike.
United suffered a blow when Kieran Richardson was taking off in some pain with an ankle injury.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side beat Orlando Pirates on Sunday and were playing the second match of their pre-season tour of South Africa.
Ferguson made just a single change to the side which beat the Pirates, replacing Phil Bardsley with 19-year-old full-back Danny Simpson.
Scholes and Ryan Giggs lined up in central midfield, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Giuseppe Rossi up front.
“Dong has the speed, physicality and his technique is improving all the time,” said Ferguson.
“He has improved a lot but we expect that and he has to continue it if he wants to be a player.
“Dong showed a lot of composure for his goal. He could easily have hit it first time but when his opportunity came, he remained patient.”
With Dong most likely getting his work clearance in order to play for Old Trafford, it will be exciting to see how he will interact with fellow Asian Red Devil Ji-Sung Park . The South Korean Park has been very consistent in his performance Dongs addition may be a good complement to his playing style.
